DH Consulting Group specializes in analysis of complex design and construction issues in support of cost-effective and time-sensitive dispute resolution. Recent Resources DH Consulting Group presented Mitigating Risk in the Design Build Environment at the AACEi Chapter meeting on June 9, 2010. The meeting took place at the CDM Offices: 50 Hampshire Street, Cambridge MA 02139 from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. This presentation focused on the risks encountered by design professionals engaged in design build contracts. The nature of the relationships among the owner, contractor, and design professional in a design build project is such that risks traditionally borne by others can now be attributed to the design professional. This seminar identified those risks and present strategies including best practices, record keeping, and quality control to mitigate them.
Your clients, whether private developers, public owners, lead architects, or design-build constructors, rely on construction cost estimates prepared by a design professional to establish project budgets and plan for future work. Structural engineers rarely find themselves in a lead role for these project documents but, nevertheless, need to understand the significance of these documents and their implications for the structural engineer's scope of services.
Did you know there are different types of construction cost estimates? There are preliminary or ballpark estimates, intermediate estimates, Engineer’s estimates (sometimes referred to as the owner’s estimate) and the Contractor’s bid estimate. The appropriate estimate type depends on when, during project development, the estimate is required. Regardless of the estimate type there are associated risks for design professionals involved in preparing an engineer’s estimate of construction costs. The article reviews the risks and the suitable methods to minimize a design professional’s exposure to those risks. Read the full article here...
